Re: Ignition R51/3
I doubt the original poster will check back, but the problem sounds very much like a failing magneto coil. When heated, the winding becomes segmented, breaks in the wire. The result is very little energy when trying to kick when warm. Additionally, you should make sure that the magneto has been timi...

Re: Re; Timing marks on a R26 flywheel
S is the static timing point...you adjust the points so that they open when the S-mark is in the middle of the window. The F-mark is the full advance point. When running and using a timing light, the F-mark will show in the window and remain there as the RPMs increase beyond a certain RPM...about 25...

Re: r26 Red light or charge light stays on problem
I guess I didn't catch that first off...so you have a fuse installed on the input line to the battery? I didn't recall there being any stock fuses on the bikes until you get to the /5 series. I would think that if the brushes weren't making good contact, then you would get no volts/amps from the gen...

Re: r26 Red light or charge light stays on problem
Well, 6.2 volts obviously shows that the generator is not charging if the engine is running. If it's a new voltage regulator and don't have another to try out, then the problem must lie with the brushes or the armature winding.

Re: 72 R75/5 new owner with problems
JoeP - I wonder if your tank is not venting properly. If it builds a vacuum after a few miles, gas won't flow the carbs. Next time this happens, quickly and safely crack open the gas cap and see if the problem goes away. Another thing would be the height of fuel in the float bowls. If the floats are...

Re: r26 Red light or charge light stays on problem
My /2 electrical book by Doug Rinckes states the following for charge light not going out: - brushes are not running correctly on commutator; possible worn brushes or springs - grease on the commutator - voltage regulator contacts dirty or possibly not working; don't file the points, but run some pa...

Re: What year is it/4 ring piston/Bing1/22/50
The production models were 1953 to 1956 with over 47000 bikes produced. VINs ran from 284001 to 331705. Your 32xxxx numbers probably indicated a 1956 model whereas the 30xxxx number is probably a 1954 or 1955. Piston size 68.5 is 1st overbore...standard size was 68mm. My Bing catalog doesn't show a ...

Re: R 60 Heads
Are your heads the 1/2" spark plug hole or the 3/4" hole? What year is the bike? In the mid '60s, BMW farmed out head production and the company used an aluminum alloy that didn't stand up well. The result was that the rocker towers would sink into the head, changing valve clearances. Afte...

Re: R 60 Heads
How much "off" are the heads? How much would it take to get them planar again? Seems to me, taking off too much at the heads creates a rise in compression and eventually head-piston-valve clearance issues. Shaving the cylinder base (if that's what you're talking about) or even the top of t...

Re: /5 poor mileage
I assume you have the stock Bing CV carbs. How does the perform in general? Do you accelerate well? Can you easily go at highway speeds, like 75-80 mph? Things that I would consider: - torn diaphragms - wrong jets and the jet needle is in the wrong clip position. The measurements are from the top or...
