R26 Axle Shaft Materials

Hi,

Today I took out both front and rear axle shafts of my '58 R26. Most of the surface is rust free but there is some surface rust on left ends (the end with the hole).

I could not understand if they're originally chrome plated or stainless. Does any one know what kind of material is used for axle shafts at that period? If possible I would like to know DIN or B.S. or AISI/SAE codes of the material.

Hi Serkan
My 1960 R60/2 has chrome plated steel and the end has rust like yours. Axle shafts are original as I have owned the bike since the mid 1960s.
