Rear Shock Lower Parts

I asked this question before but the thread seems to have disappeared...Can anyone tell me what the "correct" original finish on the cast iron lower shock eyes and adjuster sleeves was? Mine were spray painted silver and need to be refinished ASAP...

Hi David

These were originally manufactured by Georg Fischer in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, hence the logo +GF+ on the castings. Original finish was a fettled and fairly rough casting and cadmium plating.

You may find it hard to find a cad plater, and expensive if you do. I have been satisfied with silver spray paint covered with clear spray on my 3 bikes.

Hi David!

I used Nu-Chrome in Fall River, MA (508-324-0002). Sent them everything that would have been originally cad plated and got it back in about a week, for $165.00. The correct finish may be described as zinc or silver cadmium or white cadmium, it's all the same. When you get the parts back they'll essentialy be silver with a whitish powdery look on top. If you lightly go over them with a scotchbrite pad they'll look great. The plating seems to add a slightly slippery quality which makes the adjusters work nicely.

Thanks as always for everything. I removed the old silent blocks this morning (the two socket trick works like a charm!) and sent them off to International Chromium in Rhode Island. Their minimum is $85 for cad...not cheap, but at this point my anal retentiveness has taken over and I refuse to settle for spray paint!
