R11 final drive
R11 final drive
Would any of you pre-war restorers be willing to offer any suggestion? The needle bearing that run directly on the pinion shaft is loose. What is the best way to repair it?Should i use oversize needle rollers and grind the pinion shaft to fit or is there a better fix??Are oversize rollers available? Thanks
Re: R11 final drive
Dan,
I have a couple of questions first. How is it that only the pinion end bearing is bad? The main pinion bearing would also have to go bad to give you excessive clearance at the end bearing for the pinion. I have see several types of pinion bearings on r12's and it sounds like you have one of the same or similar set up on the r-11. The needles are typically encased in a holder. They are not of installed directly in the aluminum casing of the rear ( I suspect you know this). You need to replace this complete bearing that comes with new needles. If your position is that the pinion end is worn so that it is too small to spin within a standard bearing made for the original dimension, than you have no choice but to replace the pinion (and the ring with it as these are machined together). These parts are available as I have done this job myself. I hope this helps. If not, perhaps you can be more specific as to exactly what you have and I'll try to help if possible. Regards Peter N.

Re: R11 final drive
Peter,Thanks for the reply.I am trying to salvage an otherwise good gear set.I'm sure both race surfaces are worn, although i can't detect any wear on the outer race.I was thinking about machine grinding the race on the pinion shaft and fitting larger needle rollers. What do you think?
Does the needle bearing run directly on the pinion shaft on the reproduction gear set or does it use a pressed on inner race ? Thanks for any help, dan
