R 51/ 2 Tank

Would the R51 / 2 tank, be the same exact tank used for the R 71 of the late 30's?

Basically yes with the exception of the tank cap collar. The R51 to R71 had two varieties namely a flip top and/or a large conventional bayonet type. The post war R51/2 had the standard 80mmØ tank collar and lid standard to all post war BMWs and most other German bikes up till 1969.

I have one- but haven't started restoration on it-Vetch (of VBMWOA fame) could tell you. as these machines were made of left-over parts after the second world war- i wouldn't be too surprised about it.
