I have a 1951 R51/3 and I wish to replace the oil seal where the shaft enters the final drive.
I have taken the final drive together with shaft off the bike.
I've undone the left hand chrome thread bell shaped cover.
Next in my book it says remove castellated nut and drive screw out.
I have not got this on mine, it looks like there is a wedge in a slot.
The wedge appears to be a very tight fit, I think I'll have to get it pressed out through the wider hole, and then I think the shaft will come off.
Am I doing this right?????
Thanks Bob Rees
R51/3 Drive Shaft Oil Seal
Re: R51/3 Drive Shaft Oil Seal
Hello Bob , Yes that is right ,that pin is a tapered Wedge and like you say can be very tight to remove, it MUST be removed by blows at the nut end because of the taper on it.
Another common problem can be that the shaft is still hard to get off spline, usually caused by wedge deforming the splines. Good luck, Regards Geoff.
