BMW emblem

For my 1957 R26, are BMW roundels with silver lettering correct for the tank? I have heard that both silver and gold are correct for the bike.

Hi David.
Certainly not Gold! Originally was nickel plated. Prewar models including postwar R51/2 and R24 had copper plated BMW emblems.

Not real gold, just gold colored. So am i safe in assuming that the silver-colored letters are correct for the 1957 R26?

The correct style for your year BMW would be silver lettering with "serifs" (those little tails on the tops and bottoms of each letter). The letter shape was finally changed to sans-serif in 1966.
