Blue R26 in 1957?

Post by Allan Atherton »

Someone near me has a blue 1957 R26. He says it appears to be the original color. Did BMW make blue R26s?

Allan, Roland Slabon discusses standard colors in his book,
and I recall that blue was an available color on some years/models,
of course along with black, the various whites, gray and burgundy.
I'd look it up but I'm feeling too lazy to get the book off the shelf
this morning! Of course that's for the twins. BMW Motorrad in St. Louis
has a gray original-paint military R50, and that shade is a pretty "cool"
gray, that almost looks like it has a little blue in it. I wonder if that
might be the color the fellow has?

Hi Allan
BMW delivered some 500 R26's in a special "Swiss Blue" finish to the Swiss importer "Drenowatz" in Zürich between 1957 and 1959. Attached is a B&W photo. These machines were made to special order only for the Swiss market. Unfortunately the BMW archives have no information on the metallic light blue/grey paint used. We are presently trying to find this info through the Bosch archives who delivered the headlamp already painted in this colour. The tank was chromium plated and then painted over, leaving two tear drop shaped chrome sides. This was the first series BMW to be delivered with the Schorsch Meier (made by Denfeld) bench seat. It also had a sides stand and chrome sport bow type grab handle on the rear fender.
A friend of mine who also does the pinstriping for BMW, sells the paint but he says that the recipe is his secret. His website is www.motopaint.ch.

Best regards,

Mark
