Advance? Problem

In the process of trying to solve one problem on my R6, I created another (see my response to Pierre's query).
After rebuilding the carbs and replacing the ignition parts, it will not take throttle with the ignition retarded. Unless the timing is almost fully advanced, it just bogs down when the throttle is opened. This is a new problem.
I violated the rule about making more than one mod at a time and have restored the old carb parts, settings, cap and rotor with no change. I am about 99% certain it is a timing issue.....but why? The manual advance mechanism (no centrifigal) works smoothly and has full travel, which it did before. The only variable is the points. I have the gap set for the middle of the range and will next experiment with changing the point gap.
Any other ideas? Does anyone know how to accurately check the timing? There is no port to access the flywheel or timing gears. Except for the manual advance, there isn't anything to adjust except the point gap. Could it be carburation?
Best regards,
Bruce
