Freeplay

Hi Mark,
I am trying to reassemble a 1976 R75/6 that came to me in parts.
I am trying to reassemble the adjustable steering damper system.
I don't have a OEM parts catalog to work from.
When I put the adjustment rod up into the steering yolk and then put the gear assembly up on the bottom front strut support there appears to be about 1/8" to 14" of freeplay,up and down travel, in the steering damper adjustment rod. This is the rod that has a gear on one end and attaches to the adjustment knob up in the middle of the handle bar area.
Is there a shim or something that goes on this adj. rod, that I'm missing?
Thanks,
Fred R.

Appearently, there are stepped bushings at the top and bottom of the inside of the tube the steering bearings live on that control any play, up or down or otherwise,in the steerring damper control system shaft. If they are missing, and they are, you'll have play all over.

Hi Fred,

Maybe the attached picture will help you. You can order an original oem parts catalogue for the R50/5 - R90S on our on-line catalogue under the BMW part no. 01 00 9 796 600.

Best regards,

Mark
