Running Hot Solution

Post by Bob Rees »

I sent a question in on 8/9/01 to see if anyone had any ideas as to why may R69S was running hot.
I had checked air/mixture, carbie stripped three times, checked and rechecked timing, changed spark plugs.
Checked to see if the carbie flange and cylinder head was warped.
Took the head, barrel off to check everything, piston etc again inside.
Then I found the problem, the lower studs on the cylinder head that the carbie is bolted onto were sticking out too far, the top studs OK.
When the nuts were tightened the carbie was not sealing as the bolt would touch the carburettor body, so no matter how tight the nut was there remained a gap between carb and cylinder head - making the motor run too lean and too hot and too slow.
Both carburettor/cylinder flanges had gaps because of this the right worse than the left.
The studs were in this position when I bought the bike - so you would assume them to be OK!!!! I wonder how the bike ran before!!!
Thanks to the people who replied to my query.
The bike's now running fine.
