I'm in the proccess of restoring a 1954 model R68 and have noted that the frame and engine numbers aren't the same. Was it the case that engine and frame numbers for such models were NOT identical?

Engine & frame numbers R68 were 650001 to 651453 and should match. Let us readers know the actual numbers of your bike and I'm sure somebody will be able to provide you with additional information.
