R26 Handlebar assembly

Post by Dave Thomas »

Mark, here's an odd question for you: when assembling the handlebars on an R26,
which direction should the clamps face? The parts book shows them with the bolts
behind the handlebars, and the owners manual shows them with the bolts in front
of the handlebar. I'm finishing my restoration and I can't remember which way they
were. Putting them in front of the bar seems to place the bar very close to the
damper knob. What would you do?

Hi Dave,

On my R26 the clamps are fitted with the bolds in front of the handle bar and there is no problem with the damper knob. Had a look in my books and manuals and found that apparently both methods were used.

Hi Dave

The correct position is clamps facing to the rear with bolt heads towards the front. If you mount it the other way around, you know longer have a clear view of the red/green control lamps.

Dave I forgot to mention an important point. The previously mentioned handlebar position applies to the rubber mounted bars of the R25/3 and R26.

The R27 had a different fork yoke and the bars were mounted directly with an aluminium spacer inbetween bracket and yoke. Due to the different yoke, the handle bar brackets on the R27 were mounted the other way around with the brackets facing the front and the bolts facing the rear.
