tank badges and knee grips

I am planning to re-spray my bike, is there a procedure for removing badges & knee grips from the gas tank without damaging them?
If you have a pre-1970 bike, the badges have screws and the rubber kneepads just pull off the metal flanges that are holding them.
If you have a post-1970 bike, I have heard that dental floss or strong monofilament fishing line, when sawed back and forth behind the badge or kneepad, will cut the glue without harming the paint or the item being removed.
