i am having some problems re-wiring my r26. i have found that the circuit board in the headlamp shell does not match up exactly with the bmw diagrams. specifically, while the diagram shows four connections along the bottom side (H, 56, 57, 15), i have only 2 screws. and while the diagram shows four along the right side (31, 61, 58 15), i have only 2 screws with one some ways in. am i reading the diagram incorrectly?

Re: rewiring problems
David,
Repair Manual's diagram is «synthetic».
Your circuit board may be correct.
Practicaly, my R26's circuit board screws appear the following way :
Top edge
Left : 30/51 (a single screw)
Midle-right : 31
Right : 2
Bottom
Left : H
Right : 15/54 (a single screw)
56 and 57 are not screw but soldered terminals. They're about 15 mm up from the bottom edge, side to side of ignition's small copper tongue, like on diagram.
In top of these, there is screw 58 which is 25 mm down from top edge, and about 20 mm left from right edge.
Hope it'll help.
Sincerly yours,
damien
By the way, my R26 circuit board's reference is 51L11 (stamped on the reverse face. Not the face with screw). What is yours ?
Re: rewiring problems
I dont know what the board number is, as i havent removed it from the shell during re-wiring. thank you very much for help with the diagram.

damien:
thanks again for your help. however, i still have some questions:
1. top edge, right, #2: what wire goes there?
2. middle right, #31: i have a white wire coming from behind it. to what does this connect?
3. 36 and 37: to what wires do they connect? colors?
danke schon for your help. greatly appreciated.

Re: more problems
David,
Since my R26 actualy run with 12 Volt, wiring has suffered some
changes from original wiring. But from spare pieces left, and notes,
I can answer some of your questions.
»» Top edge, right, #2: what wire goes there ? ««
Well, of what I know this one is not used originaly.
(Any body has more accurate data about it ?)
»» Middle right, #31: I have a white wire coming from behind it.
To what does this connect ? ««
May be connected to head light'socket #31, that is ground.
»» 36 and 37: to what wires do they connect? colors ? ««
I suppose you means 56 and 57 ?
#56 : There is a brown wire and a white one. I think the brown
goes to speedometer light., and the white goes to handelbar's
dimmer switch (may be a connector in between).
#57 : Originaly seams to be blak woven fabric sheath.
It goes to head light'socket #57, that is pilot bulb.
On some previous message in this forum somebody suggested
to visite the following place. If you don't know it already, it may help too.

Don't hesitate to call if you need any more data.

David,
»» I dont know what the board number is, as I havent removed
it from the shell during re-wiring. ««
That's right, you'll not be able to know the number unless you remove it.
But it's not worth while to remove it just to know that number.
Let it where it is as long as you don't realy have to remove it.

last question
here we go:
now, i have three wires left unconnected from the wiring harness in the headlamp shell. they are:
violet
black with connector end
brown/black
i also have a green wire that is soldered to the lower right screw. should i just connect this to the black/green wire i have connected there?
thanks again.

Re: last question
Hi David,
»» Last question ««
Don't worry, there is no limitations !
»» Now, I have three wires left unconnected from the wiring harness in the headlamp shell. ««
Well, you've better to check what they're connected to other end.
Or, if not applicable, to list wires (size and color) and to what you've already connected them.
Anybody else coming to help ?
»» Violet ««
I don't see any wire that color.
A blak-violet wire runs from circuit board's #15 to 5 pole terminal (stop light's switch).
»» Black with connector end ««
May be Neutral indicator's light. It's connector end is squar shaped.
(A blue one with same connector should be Ignition warning light.)
»» Brown/black ««
I don't see wire that color neither.
A only brown wire runs from circuit board's #31 to generator #31 (ground).
»» I also have a green wire that is soldered to the lower right screw. ««
This is ground wire for Ignition warning light and Neutral indicator.
It's connector end is squar shaped too.
It should be screwed in the midle of the socket of these two bulbs.
Feel free to call. I'm glade to help, usualy it's the other way around !
Salut,
. damien

Congratulation !
I hope you'll post a picture of it in this forum when it'll be done.
»» Last question ««
A good «motard» never ends to improve is bike (or to try to).
»» What are the colors of the wires coming out of the 5 pt terminal (all ten up the
left and right sides)? ««
Front harness :
- Headlight #58 to «5 pole»'s 1st (top must), for tail light and side car's plug socket : black.
- Headlight #31 to «5 pole»'s 2nd, for tail light's ground : brown.
- Stop light switch to «5 pole»'s 3rd, for tail light's stop light : ?
(I don't know, but easy to identifiy, or to remplace.)
- Headlight #15/54 to «5 pole»'s 4th, for stop light switch : black-violet.
- Headlight's Neutral indicator to «5 pole»'s 5th (botom one), for Neutral contact : black.
Rear harness :
- «5 pole»'s 1st (top must) to tail light : ?
- «5 pole»'s 1st (top must) to side car's plug socket : black
- «5 pole»'s 2nd, to tail light's ground : ?
- «5 pole»'s 3rd, to tail light's stop light : ?

I can't help you more for the rear harness. Mine is not original, and I don't have other notes. That's right that «Repair Manual» is not clear about it too.
But, it's easy to track these wires with a multi-meter, or simply a flash light.
As a mater of fact, if your rear harness is not in very good order, I'll advise you to remplace it before you get into troubles (short-circuits, for instance). Especialy the wire that pass through rear fender's chanel. Mark offer it on is OnLine Catalog. (But as I didn't know him yet when I rewired my bike, I just used a good, and supple, 3 wires 220Volt cable, such as used for any electrical appliances or lights.)
A message earlier in this forum talk about needs and risks of lubrication to help leading the cable trough the chanel, and to prevent further corosion. You might as well look for it. (Tray a search using «rear harness» as key words.)
