Steib stripes

Post by Bob Rees »

I have a 1962 Steib S500 sidecar which I am restoring. It will be attached to a 1962 R69S.
Does the sidecar have white stripes next to the aluminium strips or not?
If it does should it have 1 stripe and how far from the aluminium strip should they be painted.
Or should it have 2 white stripes (thick & thin). Thanks for your help

The Steib S500 was not sold as part of a BMW motorcycle outfit, and could be attached to other motorcycles, so it had no BMW stripes. The current S500 supplied by Zweiradmuseum to various distributors (Huggett included) also does not have any stripes, even though it is probably exclusively for installation on a vintage BMW. So I would say the S500 was and is sold with no BMW stripes.

The Steib TR500 was once sold by BMW as part of a factory-built sidecar outfit, called a BMW Speziale, and those sidecars I think were striped by BMW to match the bike.

Most of the Steib S500 sidecars that I see today, whether restored or new from Zweiradmuseum, have been striped by their owners to match the BMW like in the photo attached of an S500 at the Barber Museum in Birmingham, Alabama.
