I know that this is not a "restoration tip" per say, but what helmets do people recommend? I assume most prefer an open-faced helmet, as a full-faced would seem out of place.

The black Davida pudding bowl helmets, sold by Blue Moon Cycle of Norcross, Georgia, are very authentic looking, but require goggles and are not very protective.

When I bought my R27 at the factory, I got a white German Romer open face helmet with plastic face shield, so I guess that is also authentic.

But today, I ride my R27 with a black Nolan N100 full face helmet with ear plugs, and it is extremely quiet and very safe.

Out of place or not, I wear a full coverage helmet. The new vintage-style helmets won't be very effective in a serious crash.
I believe many of them carry a disclaimer regarding their effectiveness. My helmet is a white Bell Racestar III that was left when
I quit racing sports cars. It has adjustable vents near the mouth and forehead, and the visor can be held partially open with
a ratchet mechanism. The only problem is that helmets designed for driving cars seem to be made a little lower at the back of
the neck, whereas the motorcycle helmets generally are cut a little higher. The difference is that on a bike, you tend to lean
forward and have your neck arched a little bit. This makes the car-type helmet a little uncomfortable. If you're buying a new
helmet, I'd recommend getting one that's made for riding motorcycles, and try it on with your head tilted back.

I've been thinking of painting the lower half of my helmet black, so from a distance it would look more like a "pudding bowl".
Of course you still have the visor to deal with, although some goggle styles will fit a full-coverage helmet.
