What is the story behind the scarcity of Z-series voltage regulators? They are unlisted even in contemporary official BMW spare part catalogues, although they are covered in the BMW Workshop Manual. They must have been available as a spare when the R27 was in production.

I have an original R27 regulator in excellent condition and really need to know a guide price as a friend restoring his R27 wants to pay a fair price for it.

The reliability of the Z-series regulators is unquestioned. My R50 had one fitted for almost 30 years and something near 200,000 miles without giving a moment's trouble. I have another one fitted at present that looks like lasting as long.

Your thoughts, gentlemen please...

I imagine the mechanical regulator is too expensive to manufacture these days, and not many people know how to adjust one if necessary. So it has been replaced by the cheaper disposable electronic regulator.
