Piston - Offset Piston Pin on R26

When I wanted to de-carbonize my R26, I noticed that it has got a piston with an offset piston pin (gudgeon pin). I would like to know the theory behind providing offset piston pins. In the R26, in which position should the piston be located? I request detailed guidance in the matter.
