Steering Damper Problem

I just replaced the steering damper knob and the little chrome cover underneath it on my R50/2.

They look great, but when I loosen the damper, the chrome cover comes loose too. I made
sure to fit a cotter pin to the end of the steering damper shaft so it won't come out, but there is still
quite a bit of play which allows that chome base cover to flop around.

Any suggestions for tightening this down?

Hi Jeff,
The chrome cover is only held in place by the pressure of the steering damper screw. The small sprung ball bearings in the steering damper screw prevent it from loosening or tightening by itself. If the chrome cover rattles around, then either you are missing part number 31 42 2 000 245 or your have not tightened the steering damper screw.

Mark-

I have the parts you mentioned and the steering damper screw is tightened.
The problem comes when I want to loosen it. Anything less then completely
screwed down allows the cover to come loose.

I'm thinking the problem is that part number 31 42 2 000 245 doesn't quite
fit onto the triple tree mount under the chrome cover...but it fit before so I'm not
sure what I'm overlooking with such a simplel part.
