ignition/generator R50/2

An R50/2 recently came into my possesion. the bike is originaly from pakistan and was restored there. the bike runs very well without the headlight on. once the head light is turned on it feels like the ignition has been retarded, loss of power, engine will not rev out. i am suspicious the generator is for a 6volt system and is not deliverying enough current to the now converted 12 volt system? the ignition system is an electronic system. appreciated any comments. tks
