I need some help determining the value of this motorcycle in its fully original condition. Is it a collectors item?

Hi Theo
Thanks for the mail and the notice in our guest book. The R27 lies close to my
heart. It was my first BMW which my dad gave me when I was 15 years old. He
bought it from a fellow in Claremont, Johannesburg back in 1972 and it promptly
got stolen outside the city hall. It was later found in Soweto in a water
reservoir. She now stands in full glory in our workshop in Switzerland.

Your question is a difficult one to answer as beauty is in the eye of the
beholder. What is a perfect restoration to one is a wreck to another.

An R27 as a basket case can be any thing between paying nothing and CHF 500.00
(about ZAR 2400.00) and a fully restored concourse machine battles to fetch over
CHF 7'000.00 though it can easily cost up to CHF 20'000.-- to get it into that
condition.

The prices in Europe and the US have steadily declined over the last 6 years.
Last I knew, the prices in South Africa were on average higher than in Europe.

Hope you are satisfied with the above info, as it is impossible to evaluate such
a machine without having seen it.

Best regards,

Mark

Concerning the value of an R27, I have looked at a few and here are the prices I found in the US:
My bad condition basket case - $700.
My estimate for concours restoration - $8,000.
Unrestored, 3000 miles, very good condition - $6,000 to $8,000.
Unrestored, 6000 miles, average condition - $3,500 - $4,000.
Unrestored, 30000 miles, poor condition but runs - $2,500

I bought one at a auction two years ago for $3000.00 USD. It is in very good condition and partially restored. I hope this gives you some ideas.
