R68 Exhaust balance tube & gearbox drain plug.

About 6 months ago I purchased a restored R68 (1954), it was finally time to change gearbox oil and to my suprise (disgust) the gearbox drain plug would not come out without moving the balance pipe forward quite a lot ...about 1.5cm at least. The header pipes look about correct i.e. they curve up at the silencer end and I can only imagine that the balance pipe should have a fairly significant indentation to clear the drain plug. Mark's parts catalogue lists the R50/69S part no.for this application on the R68 which would also be a ''normal'' pipe. Can someone help with this, all I can think of is forming an indentation in the pipe and having it re-chromed or making some form of an extention drain pipe ... this could be risky.
