How have people cleaned their bike's frame without soaking the engine? I have an R26 with a slightly sooty frame, but don't want to just spray it off.

Get a bike cleaner called S-100 for about $12 per quart. Use it on the frame and the motor. S-100 is not like Gunk for removing heavy deposits of dirty grease. It is water-based and gentle but very effective. Use a paint brush to rub it around a little on the motor castings. If you can't find S-100, Simple Green is chemically similar and much cheaper, but I would dilute it first.
