Ihave a 68 r50 and need to know the distance from edge of fenders to the first stripe also are akront alloy wheels ok for this bike thank you frank

Frank, according to Roland Slabon's book "How to Restore Your BMW Motorcycle",
the striping dimensions are:
Edge of fender to first stripe: 1/4"
Width of first stripe: 1/8"
Space between 1st and 2nd stripe: 5/32"
Width of 2nd stripe: 1/16"
BTW, an earlier post on this site expressed the opinion that this is a job
you could do yourself. As an owner of a sign shop with 30 years experience
with a brush, I couldn't disagree more. I'm finishing my R26 right now, and
I've sent the tank and fenders to a professional striper. Nothing will ruin
look of a fresh restoration more than a less-than-perfect striping job.

Hi Dave,
Fully share your point of view. Poor stripes, too wide stripes or stuck-on stripes can ruin an absolute perfect restoration and paint job.

BMW only sourced wheel rims from Akront as from the '70s. The BMW twins built between 1952 and 1969 had either Aluminium rims from "Weinmann" in Schaffhausen, Switzerland or steel rims from various German manufacturers. Weinmann sold off their rim production to a Belgium company in the mid 70's. The only suitable aftermarket alumium rim available thereafter were from Akront in Spain. However, Akront have just gone bankrupt again for about the 3rd time in 6 years...this time for good I believe. We are presently working on a project together with BMW to reproduce the original Weinmann rims, but it is in the early stages and will take another 6 to 8 months at least.
