Avon Police fairing

Post by iray »

I have in my posession an Avon Police Fairing pic enclosed
It is my hope that someone can tell me what years and model boxer
it was used on . I aquired it in a deal from a friend and his valuation
it seemed excessive so any info as to its value as well as its application
would be most helpful . I currently am building a vintage BMW sidecar
road racer as well as run a Dnepr sidecar BMW clone .
I have some contacts for eastern bloc spares for Dneprs as well as Urals
so any enquiries about spares would also be wellcomed .
Ride Safe I feel spring must be gettin close . iray :-)

I couldnt get jpg to load here is link to view it

Your link does not work for me. I think the Avon Police Fairing was for the /5 bikes. There was also the similar but different Avonaire fairing for /2 bikes. I will email you a photo and you can decide which fairing you have. I will also include information on their value.

The Wixom and Avonaire are not in the same league. The Wixom upper fairing is common and cheap. The Wixom lower fairing is a little harder to find, but not too expensive. Avonaires are rare, and if you find one for sale that is not mounted on a bike, it most likely has lost its mounting hardware which makes it useless. It took me two years to find a complete Avonaire and it cost a lot. A presently available alternative is the new Peel.

Mark,

Since you now own the /2 BMW Avon molds,
is there a time that you will begin production?

When I asked Mark in 2002, he replied:

"Sorry, but we have not done anything yet as it is not a priority. We have outstanding projects on the go for 6 digit figures and... We finance our own projects and also stock for BMW Mobile Tradition, so this calls for very tight and fine financial planning. The smallest test production for the fairings I estimate would tie up at USD 30'000.-- for at least 12 months. That includes restoring the original moulds and new tooling for the metal
work and hardware, travel expenditures, small test production etc. We could use this type of investment for products with a higher profit margin and turn around."

Avonaires were almost $1000 new when discontinued in the late 1980's. I paid $1000 for a good used one recently, and invested another $500 in shipping and a windshield. I bet a new Avonaire might have to cost $2,500 plus shipping. There are not many /2 BMWs, and fewer whose owners want such an expensive fairing. The demand for such a fairing might be so small that there is not much incentive to develop and manufacture it.
