R51/3 Transmission Problem

Post by Erik Bahl »

I have a 1954 R51/3 that will not go into 1st or 2nd gear. Does anyone have a procedure to adjust the tranny. I have the manual and they have a procedure to check the gear shift mechanism but the adjustment of it is not clear

The adjustment can be done best using a half cover (as described in the manual) for the gearbox on the right side. I used some plexi-glass to build one. Then you can see everything in detail and detect, why it doesn't work

Thanks, Thomas. I have the manual and the procedure describes checking neutral and grinding on the shifting dog in neutral if is does not meet some measurement requirements. That was the only adjustment I saw. Otherwise is looked like a visual inspection of the shifing forks when you are in different gears. It sounded like if there is a problem the forks are supposed to be changed. This is my first time troubleshooting a transmission and I am trying to cover all of my bases. The manual is a bit vague and I was looking for some more specific detail. By the way do you have a drawing for this plexi half cover you have. I actually have a copy of the original half cover drawing but it is missing some dimensions.

Erik,

It was common for people to take off the covers and not replace the screws in the correct order. For example, the right hand cover has different length screws and if they are re-installed in the wrong position they can foul with the shifting mechanism. Perhaps I'm stating the obvious but it might be worth checking.
