Luggage carriers or so for R51/3;

Post by Michael Steinmann »

I want to equip my R51/3 (1952) with luggage carriers, such as suitcases or pannier bags. Were there any as OEM? Any replicas or ideas? Some one made such suitable frame and bags before? I know it won't be a pretty site, but at the moment – I can’t use my bike for any thing, just riding short distance. No place for a decent lock or milk from the grocery… Thanks for any idea. Micha.

you're in luck. my R67 was an ex-police bike, and it came with it's original bags, which were the standard squared-off leather bags that you'll see used on the wartime bikes.
there's several sources for repops and they hang from the stock metal carrier-which mounts nicely on top of the fender rack,also reproduced.

M-
i didn't locate a picture of the complete assembley, but here's a ebay link for the bag and one version of the frame. as usual for BMW, several companies supplied them. try a search by looking up racks for the prewar R12, R71's...they continued to use them on the early postwar police twins.

here's the link:
