/5 Allen screws for retaining /2 clutch components

Post by Pierre Michaud »

I have been tempted to replace the standard contersunk slotted screws holding the clutch components (6) by the /5 Allen head. To do this one must do a modification as the ribs from the trans interfere with the rotation. One needs to grind the ribs to a suitable clearance so that the heads of the Allen screws which protrude do not hit the ribs. I have been left with the impression that this conversion is done and practiced frequently in Europe and all over the world. I have not found any literature on the latter although I have been told there are numerous technical articles that have been written and cover the topic. I am looking for any information regarding this modification and any incident or mishap that may have been generated by this conversion. In short, I am not sold on the conversion at the moment, although I really like the Allen head feature.

Someone familiar with what they do in Europe tells me you can use Allen and Torx bolts, but this person said he used special Allen bolts that did not require the transmission case ribs to be ground for clearance.

Better to look for proper bolts than to grind on the transmission.

Allen,

I have decided to do just that.....go for the original.....but those Allen heads were really tempting!
